easaHQ part of easa010 // European Architecture Students Assembly

A not for profit organisation running architecture events, hosting exhibtions, giving kids a start and bringing people together.

Submitted by cma.

Having registered and received the most votes in the winter addition we have decided to have a second pass at umbro industries.

easa010 is an organisation of students of architecture along with a couple of recent graduates. We have been working on all things easa010 since November 2007, bidding for the summer assembly in Cyprus in late 2008 and forming a legally recognised company in 2009. The team is 100% volunteer based.

easaHQ is using the organisation of the 30th European Architecture Students Assembly, which is being held in Manchester this summer, as a spark to benifit the creative community of Manchester, both in architecture and beyond.

We are working closely with Manchester City Council, among others, to bring the assembly face to face with the residents of Manchester, through events in the city centre, but also by placing the results of the workshops in public locations as part of easaDAY.

20% of the workshops at this year's assembly will be Manchester based - either run by talent from Manchester or aimed at leaving a tangible improvement to the city's fabric and art scene.

Working from easaHQ the team have put together international competitions, run workshops on architecture, held and arranged walking tours of Manchester, and held events in the city centre designed to encourage people to engage with and think about their city.

We have also established an art gallery which has a constantly growing reputation. The gallery has a strict policy of providing free space for our three target groups: emerging artists, architecture students and community groups. So far we have worked with dozens of individuals, often giving them the opportunity to exhibit for the first time.

easaHQ ties this commitment to grass roots art to its links with Interval, CUBE, MADF, Blank Media and others in an initiative we are calling easaHUB. The aim is to feed artists who are interested in helping out with EASA to related creative volunteer bases, such as CUBE and UHC.

As well as this easaHUB is working to give vulnerable and disadvantaged young people exposure to the particularly overlooked subject of Architecture, along with Construction, Design and other STEM-related sectors who ordinarily would not have the opportunity to do so.

easa010 will bring together 400 students of architecture working on 25+ workshops for two of the most energetically creative weeks Manchester has ever seen.

EASA is an example of creative people making things happen, challenging opinions and making a difference for the wider community. easa010 is happening. easaHQ is happening now and will still be here when easa010 is a memory, but we need money.

The money we are applying for will go toward maximising the impact of this unique opportunity for the creative community of Manchester. It will go on materials, bills, operational costs and up keep of easaHQ, Manchester talent run workshops in the assembly itself and all associated costs. It will enable easa010 to leave a living legacy to its host city.

I walk past that building every day and I have to say that I had no idea that that is what is going down there. I think you should do something to make it more inviting!

EASA Manchester will be one of a kind. With an urban context like the one in Manchester and a focus on 2010's EASA-theme set on "IDENTITY", i am just hoping i will be there to take part in this creative two-week-long brainstorming! Imagine the result!

EASA Manchester will be a wonderful urban event for the city. As an assembly that focuses heavily on its context its perfect for Umbro industries. I hope all the hard work pays off. Good luck!
