Archived: Upper Space Gallery - The Second Coming
submitted 6th Jan 2010 by Upper_SpaceReady for the rebirth.
You've seen what we can create from nothing....
I'm sure you've read the old scriptures, heard the rumours and seen the marks on the walls...
A self financed and self built cultural space in the Northern Quarter - the heart of the city; the first in the North-west, that supported and nurtured the most exciting and dedicated local street artists as well as a few of our international favourites.
A place that curated and launched some of the most infamous underground shows, a place that opened the doors to the world of graffiti and street art, to the public, for free.
We had to close our doors due to unreasonable demands from the owners of the warehouse, and Upper Space lost everything that the dedicated volunteers had built with Mancunian blood, sweat and tears.
But we will not stop...
Now we have found a business advisor...
A network of affiliated up and coming, experimental street artists working in new media technology, traditional mediums and beyond...
The know how and ability to represent the unrepresented, with a series of unique exhibitions, talks and workshops within a unique gallery environment.
And we have all the systems, infrastructure, and equipment to be reborn, and continue our unique approach to the Arts...Upper Space must be built.
Our proposal is simple.
We need another space.
And we've found one...
A hub, a focus. a catalyst. Everything is ready, not only to re-fill the void that our closure has left but to learn from the events of the past and make Upper Space a sustainable business venture and continue to support all the artists we had the pleasure of looking after in 2008
We would use funds that are created from sales of local, national and international artists works to continually fund the gallery space, put on experimental cutting edge shows, and showcase the best audio and visual arts in the city.
We want to continue and develop our working practices to give the public a unique open studio environment where they can purchase street art, observe artists working, and get involved directly through our participatory workshop programmes. All in the city centre of Manchester. Our working practices would offer work placement opportunities to students and promote inclusivity to the arts for the young and old.
To mark the beginning of this rebirth we have teamed up with the Scrawl Collective (www.scrawlcollective.co.uk) - an international street art collecive featuring some of the world's most in demand illustrators, painters and designers, to offer a unique range of screen prints for sale in the gallery and online... if we are successful!
Your investment will fund:
1 years lease and business rates.
Online gallery website and shop.
Marketing and promotion.
A very special launch event featuring some of Manchester's best digital music and art pioneers.
Thanks,
Upper Space

good luck!
