Not Part Of Festival
The Not Part Of festival is a totally open and inclusive multi arts festival, providing the alternative to Manchester International Festival
Submitted by NotPartOf.
Not Part Of is dedicated to removing barriers for artists, which is why the festival:
*Provides a platform for anyone who wants to be Not Part Of to participate.
*Does not charge participants to be involved.
*Does not take a cut from the artists’ ticket sales.
*Provides information and access to free/discounted venues.
*Provides advocacy and support.
*Celebrates creativity that happens in Manchester.
The festival was set up in March 2007 when it was identified that the Manchester International Festival was a commissioned, curated festival and therefore left little room for other home grown talent. From a Myspace page and a basic website and with no funding, the Not Part Of festival was able to get 47 events running at the same time as the first Manchester International Festival.
When Not Part Of was first launched the title for the festival was much longer - Not Part Of Manchester International Festival - however the directors quickly identified that the festival was not just for those who were not part of Manchester International Festival, but for all of those who didn’t fit criteria of other festivals, groups, cliques, scenes. By having no criteria Not Part Of removed barriers creatively for people to experiment. Thus, by 2009 Not Part Of had gained momentum and showcased over 100 events.
The festival supports and provides opportunities to showcase emerging artists from across Manchester and the North West.
The festival is about creating a legacy and a longevity for Manchester artists - those who have been part of Not Part Of - have continued to stay within the creative industry.
Who Does the Festival Benefit?
- New/Emerging talent: The festival is providing the platform to showcase new artists.
- Local creative community: will expand and grow with this completely inclusive festival.
- Volunteers: are provided with great opportunities to get involved on the non performance side of the festival, gaining practical and useful skills.
- Businesses & Organisations: can come together with a shared goal.
- The city/region: The festival will provide both creative and economic benefit to the region.
- Audiences: By keeping costs down for the artists, this results in cheaper/free tickets and therefore room for audiences to experiment.
The Project’s Goal and Why we want Funding
So far the festival has had success but we want to build on this - we want 2011’s festival to be bigger, better and include and benefit even more people from the region. The funding would:
- cover print and viral marketing campaigns.
- develop the festival website to have a portal for artists involved to access important information.
- cover costs of rehearsal space that we would offer to artists for free.
- cover volunteer’s expenses.
The Not Part Of festival has a DIY ethos. We encourage artists not to wait to be picked, but to make things happen for themselves - empowering the people of this region.
The Not Part Of festival for 2011 will run from 30th June - 16th July.
This is such a worth while event that is ran by volunteers and helps to showcase local mancunian talent!

Closest thing Manchester has to a well run open entry fringe festival... utterly deserving but needs all the help it can get.

An amazing festival that reaches into the beating heart of manchester's vibrant arts scene and gives its already thumping energy a massive, core-shaking shock that rocks the whole city

NPO is a great, fully inclusive festival working on very egalitarian principles hosting a wide variety of underground talent and fully deserves your support!

I have never been to a festival like NPO. It really captures the unique atmosphere Manchester has like nothing else. If the next festival is anything like the previous one, it will be incredible!! Roll on 30th June!

The NPO festival should be supported in the same vein that it supports the underbelly of Manchester's bright and creative arts scene. As an unsupported artist the NPO festival gave me the opportunity to showcase my work, reaping the rewards. Thanks NPO.
