Manchester Pedal Power

We wish to promote the positive environmental, health, safety and cheap aspects of cycling through pedal powered fun activities for all ages

Submitted by nes.

Manchester Pedal Power is a not-for-profit collective made up of artists, musicians, youth workers, designers, plumbers and engineers. We are part of the I Bike MCR community and within this over the last 4 years have helped to organise many events and activities to help build a strong cycling community in our city. We promote the positive environmental, health, safety and economic aspects of cycling and fun aspect too! We donate our time and our skills for free (we don't get paid for it) so that we can help bring about change that will benefit us all.

We wish to develop a 10-bike sound system that can power up to a 1 kilowatt sound system for bands, DJs and speaker events. It will create a direct relationship between the performers and their audience because when the pedaling stops so will the music. This interaction will create a collaborative experience where the participants become actively involved in the performance and are in control of the power supply.

We shall organise a number of pedal powered events around the city to entertain and educate. These events will take place in a variety of venues and aimed at people of different ages and backgrounds. For example we shall power a school disco in a primary school (the head teacher is already very excited at the prospect); club night aimed at young people and community events where we shall encourage an intergenerational and cultural mix. of people. The events will be free of charge to enter in order to make them accessible to all no matter their economic status.

We hope that providing exciting, innovative entertainment in this way will not only be fun but also directly help to tackle the problems connected with energy use and promote thought and discussion around issues such as climate change.

Through this project, we hope to nurture learning and discovery and develop the critical thinking needed to tackle future environmental and social problems. With a positive attitude, we aim to strengthen commitment towards social and ecological change. The project has great educational value and illustrates the desperate need for development of creative ways of living that have less impact on our planet.

Looking towards the future we intend to use the system at community carnivals and festivals in Manchester to help bring the community together and continue education around the issues of health, safety, environmentalism and economics.
