JUBILEE (1977 - 2011)

A multi-artist collaboration presenting Derek Jarman's 1977 punk epic Jubilee as an avant-garde immersive cinema screening.

Submitted by brenocallaghan.

I am an established creative producer and practitioner, passionate about group collaboration and audience experience. Pooling talent, recruiting local artists and working across multiple disciplines to incorporate cinema, visual arts, new media and immersive theatrical techniques, the recent success of Peaches Christ presents All About Evil (a live, 4-D comedy horror experience at Cornerhouse, Manchester from San Francisco artist and filmmaker Joshua Grannell), - which I curated and produced as an opening highlight of the Abandon Normal Devices Festival - has left local performers and film buffs clamouring for further ‘experiential’ activity of this nature.

Although I can’t guarantee the police riot vans, literary inspired strippers and the audience vomit-geyser that rolled up, undressed and erupted at the arrival of Peaches Christ, I do promise to prioritise collaborative, localised and site-specific production.

Working alongside Manchester’s foremost D.I.Y. club promoter and leaning heavily toward a queer-art sensibility in dire need of providing truly alternative activity of a high quality that does not seek to establish new venues or long-running club nights, I hope in 2011 to work with Manchester’s avant-garde set to present Derek Jarman’s 1977 punk opus JUBILEE. Although currently under discussion, it would feature an experimental performance pre-show that would reflect the narrative of the film, culminating in a screening of the movie and take place in a former ecclesiastical setting.

Although I am hopeful of sourcing core costs, venue and help in-kind, in order to grow and support our family of performers and volunteers (none of whom including myself take a fee), it is essential that professional documentation, costume and décor are able to move beyond a make-do mentality so the event can be justly served.

I am requesting £4,000, the breakdown of which is as follows:

£600 professional photo documentation (4 hours plus post-production) £800 3-minute video documentary £500 costuming £500 décor £200 hair and make-up £200 performer travel £300 poster design and production £500 lighting, PA, seating hire £400 film licensing requirements from BFI and local council

TOTAL £4,000

The actual cost of the event is much more but I would hope to ring-fence and secure the above to support our contributors and ease the personal financial burden of participating in such a show whilst providing remuneration in the form of shared video, photography and artwork – which in turn supports local providers.
