A live performance by electronic/improvisation group Token Otter and interactive arts studio Kimchi and Chips.

Performance
We have been given access to a unique and striking space in Ancoats to put on a one-off arts/music event which immerses the audience in a new form of generative adapted acoustic music, presented inside a pioneering visual sculpture.

Token Otter and Kimchi & Chips will present the public with a brand new type of live performance, which is centred around an improvisation dialogue between live music and visuals. To ensure this highly experimental event remains cohesive and inspirational, we have chosen to tell a story of the venue and the surrounding area through a set of abstract movements.

The venue is a huge impressive church which has been recently redeveloped but lays empty. Its vast chamber will host a digital visual sculpture that is 5m high and 10m wide, which is fleshed out with strips of material that create a 3D image using a new groundbreaking technique. The audience and performers will enter inside and exist in the same space as the 3D digital objects.

The music will be created by improvising trio 'Token Otter' using live improvisation and bespoke generative audio techniques developed by the group. The sound will be emitted through a quadraphic sound system perfected for this space, creating a rare, incredible audio experience.

The method for the 3D projection was developed by Elliot Woods from Kimchi and Chips who has subsequently been invited to speak at Siggraph Asia in Yokohama this year alongside two other developers of Wiremap based technology. Elliot founded Pangaea and has developed visual installations for that event and Sex With Robots.

Promotion
We have planned/budgeted for the event to be promoted regionally with hand to hand flyering in the city centre and South Manchester corridor; posters outdoors, in arts spaces and student spaces, features in regional radio and newspapers and use of promotional sms and email lists. Nationally through arts/culture sections in newspapers, and relevant newsletters and mailing lists. Europe-wide through our partners arts institutions, design houses, arts press and blog sites.

Funding
We are looking for financial help with this project as it is completely unique and innovative, and we believe this would be compromised without external support.

Amount Applied For: 10000

Looks to be a powerful use of a fantastic space in a very contemporary manner. Promises to be a challenging way to engage the interest of the local community.

Thanks for the comments LSamuels. will try and make this clearer in the text very soon.

of course many artists think about it, but lots of art and music is based more on expression than experience.

How do generative techniques, improvisation and computer imaging tell the sory of this post-industrial zone? It seems possible, but it's not self-evident.

Totally immersive experiences are possible without telling a story. Do you want to tell a story or not? What's the gist of this story?

Posted by LSamuels on Oct 9th, 2009

"It's always about how the audience will experience it" - How many artists don't think about this?

Last time I went to a gig inside a church it was incredible. This looks to be even better.
