After two attempts at University, I decided to take life by the horns and become self-employed, sharing my knowledge of foreign languages.

Living in Manchester, I am hugely aware of the cultural diversity and also peoples' attitudes towards "foreigners". I am 20 years old, and I am a self-taught French speaker and also speak Spanish, Italian and some Japanese. Going to University didn't satisfy me, as I wanted to jump into reality and start trying to educate people, young and old. I currently teach 14 people, some voluntary. I also work closely with the Big Issue North and regularly see people with no aim in life. I would love to work with such people, and make classes and talks both accessible and useful, teaching English to those who need it and vice-versa. At the moment, I travel all over Greater Manchester on public transport and work very long hours, often starting at 9am and finishing at 11pm for a very small income. I work extremely hard to produce my own resources weekly and keep my website updated and trying my best to promote. I would love to be able to set up a safe space to regularly use to teach in, and provide a place where people from all cultures can feel comfortable and have lessons if they so wish. I charge very little for language lessons, and make it my priority to treat each person individually and make constant checks regarding progress. I feel this is important, as I have looked into this field in Manchester and all schools charge huge prices which are often unaffordable and with unclear structure. Providing this service would allow people from other countries to meet and chat. I know this is an issue at present, as two months ago, a Spanish friend moved into my house and spoke no English. She had huge difficulty finding people to meet in the same position as herself and also felt extremely isolated. Of course, I am aware that certain institutions exist, but there are none that bring the whole community together and educate as one, and it would be my dream to be able to open a place where this can happen.
