Broke'n'£nglish-Life on the Costa Del Salford

Estate Recordings Ballin' on a Budget ManksOnTour2011

Submitted by Broke_N_english.

When it comes to Music, Broke’n’£nglish has represented the city of Manchester creditably and consistently from the moment we formed in 2002. Despite falling under the HipHop/Urban Music heading, we have always fought to differentiate ourselves from those images which have become so synonymous with the style of music we make. We have never had a record deal, management, or outside investors of any kind, yet we have managed to make a real and definite mark on U.K and international music through hard work, effective use of limited resources and most importantly an honest and real approach towards the music we create and associate ourselves with.

Whether or not you take an interest in HipHop/Urban music, one cannot fail to notice the desperate decline in the message it presents which appears to have fallen more and more into disrepair since its inception. I have been a youth worker for over 10 years now and I refute any suggestion that music has no influence on our city’s young people and how they react towards the world around them. It does.

I have been aware of the Umbro Industries programme since it creation in 2009 but it is only now that I feel I have the sufficient ideas and information necessary to make this an appropriate application. If awarded with the Umbro Industries bursary, we would invest the money into three of the aspects that make up our organisation. This would provide us with the momentum to make a real contribution to our music scene that would be of benefit to Manchester both culturally and socially.

Studio Space. As an organisation we have never had access to a studio of our own. We have always recorded from home which has its obvious limitations. If we had the chance to secure a space of our own it would prove to be an invaluable resource both for ourselves and those releasing music via our label (Estate Recordings) We have a distribution deal with ST holdings that we are struggling to take advantage of due to a lack of recording facilities. Some of the young people we work with have been getting support from the likes of Zane Lowe and Annie Mac without having anywhere to record regularly. If they were provided with a place to work on and develop their music there would be no barrier to what they can achieve.. For this we are applying £3000 which would cover the cost of a years rent and our fans would get what they have been asking about for the longest, our second album!!

Estate Recordings. As stated above, our label has a distribution deal. With the correct funding we can release quality Manchester music. We feel its time to take the power away from the labels to empower and motivate musicians to do it themselves in order to fix and take back what is perceived as an ailing music industry. We are tired of money hungry artists giving a bad name to what could and should be some of the most inspiring and forward thinking music in modern times rather than what radio stations and television channels are feeding us veraciously every day. For this we are applying for £3500 which would enable to release both our own music and several other local artists we have identified and work with on a regular basis.

Ballin’ on a Budget. BOAB has become a staple part of the Manchester clubbing experience and is aimed at people who love music that are fed up with the number of over priced and pretentious bars in the city. There aren’t many clubs for Mancunians to go to that are cheap and trouble free with a great atmosphere and amazing music. Anyone who has been to Ballin’ on a Budget will testify that this is purely what our night is about. We present live music in nice surroundings at unbeatable prices and fund it all ourselves. We have a large and loyal following even though our only promotion is a facebook event page and word of mouth. The night has come along way and with an extra injection of cash it can and will become legendary! We are applying for £3500 which would secure and pay deposits for artist bookings over the next 12 months.

The Broke’n’£nglish ethos is very much based on what are very northern qualities. Honesty, hard work and tell it like it is. We have continued to prove that success can be achieved in unlikely sources through utilizing whatever is available at that moment in time.

We are not afraid of hard work. I currently study Business at the Manchester College full time (HND level working towards a degree) combined with a part time job as a youth worker/arts award advisor across Salford and Greater Manchester for a number of youth organisations. This experience and learning would ensure any monies would be used effectively and would be injected into the heart of Manchester culture and its very own people. I feel that this bursary combined with both our knowledge and insight into the Manchester music scene would give an opportunity to one of the good guys....for once.

Give us a chance...thanks for your time.

Amount Applied For: 10,000

Its so hard to record music coming from a council estate background. These guys will be, to the Manchester scene, as Scholes and Giggs are to United. Lots of my friends make music, would be inspiring for us to see this happen. Go Umbro.

They provide a social utility to many aspects of Manchester. Their work is known as having helped many disaffected young people, as is their talent as artists. They regularly give 110% to other people and deserve a little help.
