30th European Architecture Students Assembly - easa010

400 students, from 40 countries, for 2 weeks of 25 workshops, of Archtecture+Art, in 20 city centre locations in 1 city: easa010 Manchester

Submitted by cma.

The EASA assembly brings together the brightest and most creative minds from schools of architecture from around the continent and beyond for two intense weeks of workshops, lectures, events and more. easa010 will be the first assembly since EASA’s creation in Liverpool in 1981 that this hugely respected European event will be held on English soil, and it is coming to Manchester.

The program centres on workshops which will create a range of built projects which, working with the city council, will be displayed in public spaces around the city centre on Saturday the 14th of August (get it in your diaries). Apart from this exhibition, there will be events in the programme aimed at allowing participants to interact with inhabitants of Manchester.

The organisation of easa010 started back in 2007. After a year of preparation we took a team to Cyprus, to bid to host the event (think Olympics). Having put in 12 months of preparation we were delighted to hold off a strong rival bid from Turkey. Sticking to the traditions of EASA, the whole organisation team for 2010 is comprised of volunteers; either students or recent graduates and easaUK2010 was established as a not for profit company.

Having EASA in our city is a huge opportunity, one which we have grabbed, run with and sold to as many people as will listen. We see easa010 as not only a chance to bring talented people to Manchester and show them our city, but also to use EASA as a platform for up and coming artists and community groups from our city to utilise.

ASK developers have donated 43 Hulme Street, a two story office, to us for the duration of the organisation process. One half of the building, now easaHQ, houses our office, while the other has been converted into a gallery space. The gallery is free to hire and has housed exhibitions by student architects, interactive art students, a book launch and artists exhibiting their first solo shows.

To be the success that we know it can be easa010 requires backing from all parts of the city. We are supported by Manchester City Council, Manchester School of Architecture and ASK Developers to name but a few. Now we need cash. The participants pay a subscription, but this is weighted against their countries’ economy, and typically accounts for 20% of the cost of hosting an event.

The bursary will go towards accommodation, catering and material costs of the assembly and workshops.

We are working hard to give Manchester an internationally renowned event that will live long in the memory and impact on the landscape of architectural education, and to give EASA an event that will inspire a generation. For the first time in 30 years EASA is coming home; this is Manchester’s opportunity to branch into new territory, making a statement of being at the forefront of the future of architecture.
